Carrera Eyewear to Host Lounge for SXSW

The Carrera Cafe at SXSW

South by SouthWest just keeps growing. One would be hard pressed to find a more important stance for a social festivity meeting the needs of a nation, a world and message saying music is the common language of the heart and soul. So stated it’s nice to note this ongoing gathering by observing the now annual success of The Carrera Cafe at this year’s SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas. The festival this year was highlighted by a timely tribute to the recently deceased Alex Chilton of Box Tops fame and Big Star infamy.

Big Star’s Jody Stephens and Andy Hummel, aided by Jon Auer, and Ken Stringfellow organized an all-star tribute to Chilton. Show highlights included performances of classic Big Star songs by Evan Dando and a particualrly rousing performance of September Gurls by Susan Cowsill and the Watson Twins with Hummel on guitar.

Carrera Eyewear hosted its ongoing Escape serving as the ultimate oasis for musical artists, VIPS and media at the newly renovated Cedar Door. Estelle, Macy Gray, “Entourage” actor Adrien Grenier AKA Honey DuContra with his band the Honey Brothers, celebrity DJ Steve Aoki, and various up-and-coming musical artists all stopped by to share some insight on why Austin might easily be the vibe center of the music universe.

Featuring an array of services ranging from massages and hairstyling to a live tattoo parlor, the 2,000-square-foot outdoor retreat served as a centralized hub where press had the opportunity to meet and interview artists and celebrities, and where all festival VIPs could unwind. The venue also featured live music by notable DJs and various music artists who stopped by to perform exclusive acoustic sets.

Launched in 2009, The Carrera Escape began in New York as an answer to a much-needed urban retreat. It continues to refine the idea of a “stay-cation” and has evolved into a special getaway for celebrities and tastemakers. In addition to this stint in Austin, the Escape will visit five major cities this summer: New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Miami.

Wiley X Eyewear To Sponsor Jim Yates' Pontiac

Wiley X Adds Sport Shooter Patrick Flanigan to Roster of Sponsored Athletes

Wiley X Eyewear's latest sponsored athlete Patrick FlaniganThe name Wiley X has become synonymous with high performance eyewear and accessories for more than 20 years. During that time, it’s also become synonymous with top-notch sponsored athletes. Wiley X has amassed a crew of incredible athletes from a wide range of extreme sports, from NASCAR superstars to Pro Bass Anglers, to represent its unique brand. And now the company is proud to announce that World Record-breaking Xtreme Shooting legend Patrick Flanigan has just been added to the diverse Wiley X team, to join the ranks of heavy hitters like Skeet Reese, Denny Hamlin and Carl Edwards to name a few.

For decades, Wiley X’s renowned glasses featuring High Velocity Protection (HVP) have been gracing the faces of heroes in the sporting arena, as well as the heroes who protect our freedom – being trusted by US Armed Forces all over the globe as well as for legions of American law enforcement professionals. So it’s not surprising that one of the top dogs of the fast growing sport of Xtreme Shooting would turn to Wiley X’s rugged, slick, dependable shooting glasses.

“As an Xtreme Sport Shooter and avid sportsman, my eyes are everything! Wiley X’s products provide me with the safety, style and Xtreme protection that I need when setting new world records and performing my live Xtreme shows,” says the 30-year-old Flanigan. “Wiley X’s world class reliability and high performance quality gives me the ultimate in security – and that allows me the freedom to not worry about the safety of my eyes, so I can focus on shooting targets.”

And shooting targets is what he does – fast and furious. He’s broken six Xtreme Shooting World records, including shooting 12 shotgun rounds in 1.42 seconds and taking nine clay targets hand thrown, individually shot, from the hip and without assistance. But there’s little that he does by half measures – he’s also a black belt in karate and is in the Guinness Book of World Records for drumming feats.

“We are thrilled to welcome Patrick to the Wiley X team of sponsored athletes,” says Myles Freeman Jr., President of Sales for Wiley X. “His incredible shooting prowess, his enthusiasm and unstoppable, competitive drive are a perfect fit for both the company he’ll be keeping with our other amazing athletes, and for our brand itself. He’s the guy to watch in his unique sport and we can’t wait to see where his skill will take him next. We’re honored to play a role in his success now and in the coming years.”

FramesDirect.com’s Austin Expansion

FramesDirect.com Founder Inspired by American Idol Contestant’s Foundation

Chairman Coordinates Donations to Danny Gokey’s Sophia’s Heart Foundation

Houston, TX June 17, 2009 – A near tragedy for Dr. Guy Hodgson, a founder and chairman of leading online eyewear provider, FramesDirect.com led to an independent fund raising effort for a well-deserved foundation, a foundation that happened to be set up by a contestant on the American Idol TV show.

Dr. Hodgson with his son, Matthew, shortly after the heart surgery. American Idol fan Dr. Guy Hodgson and his wife had 14-week premature triplets in March 2008, leading to heart operations for two of the babies, one a seven-hour open-heart surgery. The baby’s heart actually had to be stopped and he was put on a bypass machine. Fortunately, the heart defect was repaired and all of the babies are now thriving.

Dr. Hodgson was very touched when watching the story of American Idol finalist Danny Gokey and the love he had for his late wife, who also had a heart condition and died in July 2008, four weeks prior to Mr. Gokey’s Idol audition.

The Fashion Team on TV Guide’s Idol Wrap Up show wanted to feature the eyewear worn by Gokey during his performances on American Idol and direct the public to the fan web site, DannyGokeyGear.com, for more information on the various frames. DannyGokeyGear.com contacted FramesDirect.com, to arrange for an easy way for fans to purchase the eyewear.

The frames worn by Danny on Idol are frames made by major manufacturers and were already available on the FramesDirect.com web site. For Dr. Hodgson, giving a portion of the profits of these frame sales seemed like a simple and effective way to help a cause that was near and dear to him.

FramesDirect.com agreed to split the gross profits with the fan site, because DannyGokeyGear.com will be donating a portion of the profits to Sophia’s Heart Foundation. When there appeared to be some confusion in the social media over the campaign’s intentions, Dr. Hodgson decided he would also make contributions directly to the foundation himself. His first hand experience of his own children undergoing heart operations made this fund raising effort very personal to him. To emphasize his personal commitment to the cause, Hodgson also pledged to give 50% of the remaining FramesDirect.com profit from all sales of these frames between May 24, 2009 and July 21, 2009, regardless of whether the purchase is made by a fan, to Sophia’s Heart Foundation. Dr. Hodgson has contacted Sophia’s Heart Foundation to inform them of the pending donation.

As of June 12, 2009, sixty-two frames have been sold in the campaign. FramesDirect.com and DannyGokeyGear.com will continue to monitor sales and make their final donations on July 22nd 2009.

Dr Hodgson said, “I know the endless hours of anguish as a loved one undergoes open heart surgery. If a frame we already sell, but is also worn by Danny, can help a child then this is a cause I wish to contribute to. This is personal to me.”

“It appears there may have been some confusion among Danny’s fans and perhaps even Danny himself about this project,” Dr. Hodgson said. “Hopefully, this information will clarify the situation and my personal involvement and also increase the awareness among the public of Sophia’s Heart Foundation,” he added.
