Golden Globes 2017 Eyewear Edition: Glasses of the Stars

The stars came out in droves for the 2017 Golden Globes awards ceremony last night. All eyes were on the red carpet, checking which celebrities brought their A-game. While La La Land was the clear winner, the film Moonlight and the television show Atlanta were on everyone’s lips as they collected the accolades. The audience was also filled with excitement when Brad Pitt took the stage to present.

But the big moment of the night went to Meryl Streep, the recipient of this year’s Cecil B. DeMille Award. Streep is regarded as one of the finest actresses in the film industry. She used her platform of recognition last night to address political concerns and issue a call-to-action for artists and journalists. Always the epitome of class, Streep looked regal in a black gown with bejeweled applique and, of course, a pair of glasses.

If you’re in the market for a coppery, semi-rimless, cat-eye frame like Meryl’s we’ve come up with a few options that fit the bill. The Lulu Guinness L750 eyeglasses are comparable. And this Vera Wang pair (Caitlin) are also similar. But you can take this look to the next level, with Lafont Indigo frames, a true style statement.

Billy Bob Thorton accepted the trophy for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series (Drama) for his performance in the Amazon Original Series Goliath wearing sunglasses that look a lot like the Ray-Ban Clubround.

And Steve Carell, along with Kristen Wiig, introduced the films nominated for best animated feature film. While handing out the award to Zootopia, Carell wore some interesting two-tone acetate frames that gave his look a retro twist. You too can be quirky-cool like Steve in these Shuron Sidewinder eyeglasses. Choose the “Black Fade” option or the popular “Crystal” clear version to take part in this throwback trend.

Prada, Michael Kors, Persol, and Tory Burch Caught on Film

Here at FramesDirect.com we sell the highest quality designer glasses from the most fashionably aspirational brands.  Four of our favorite brands got the Hollywood treatment when we created some imaginative video vignettes. These original narratives speak to the unique brand stories of Tory Burch, Persol, Michael Kors, and Prada eyeglasses and sunglasses.

First up, a ton of Tory Burch sunglasses go on vacation to the Hamptons. We find our Tory Burch fanatic trying to pack her suitcase for the weekend (wearing a gorgeous Tory Burch shift dress), but there’s not quite enough room for every style that she wants to squeeze in. Do you think she will sacrifice her books and bottle of wine for a wardrobe of sunnies? Watch the video to find out!

If you’re not already familiar with the Persol brand of eyewear, this is a beautiful introduction. These hand crafted, Italian frames are perfect for the man who is passionate, creative, and discerning – just like the artist in the video. Watch as he gets inspired to create a colorful mural while wearing 3 different sophisticated spectacles.

Michael Kors is a beloved American sportswear brand whose designer has also become a famous personality due to guest appearances on Project Runway. Much like the contestants on that show, in our video a fashion designer is experiencing a creative block. That is, until some Michael Kors sunglasses become the pièce de résistance of her design.

Finally, we have Prada – the final word in chic eyewear. A brainy yet fashion-forward pair of scientists are working in the lab when the equations on the wipe board create a surprising pattern. Can a love of fashion lead to chemistry? Anything is possible.

We had a great time on set creating these videos. Thanks to the team at Sparksight, here in Austin, TX, who turn fashion dreams into reality.

Top 10 Oakley Polarized Sunglasses

You step outside in your brand new sunglasses. You got them for free with a bunch of other promotional giveaways at your last half marathon. Oh yeah, these look good, you think to yourself.

Making your way to the sidewalk, you press play on the first song in your running mix. Picking up speed, you notice an intense glare reflecting off the pavement, your eyes tearing up slightly due to the burn. Wanting to escape the glare and hoping for a more scenic route, you venture to the park near your house. However, your dark lenses do nothing to enhance the scenery and dull the view instead. You return home defeated, wondering if there is a better way.

Oakley Polarized Lenses

Oakley Polarized Lenses

Oakley has a solution: HDPolarized lenses.

You may have heard the word “polarized” tossed around before, but you’re not really sure what it means. Without getting too much into the science, polarized light is light that bounces off surfaces, reflecting light and creating glare. Polarized lenses filter out polarized light.

In addition to pavement, water and snow also cause glare when the sun reflects off them. Not only is glare annoying, the UV light from the glare can harm your eyes. Oakley polarized lenses block 99% of glare.

Oakley polarized lenses are some of the clearest lenses on the market. While other brands use glue to attach polarized filters, Oakley uses infusion molding to make their lenses. As a result, their one-layer lenses prevent distortion, blur and shifting of objects when you look through them.

You can choose from a wide range of lens options based on the outdoor condition. For example, if you are going to be out on the water, Bronze Polarized or Deep Blue Polarized lenses are really good at filtering out the glare from the water. If you go for a run, OO Red Iridium Polarized or Black Iridium Polarized lenses can block the glare reflected off asphalt.

Not only is Oakley at the top of its game when it comes to polarized sunglasses, they have so many different styles, whether you are looking for a sporty pair of sunglasses for extreme performance, an active pair with some performance features or a lifestyle pair for daily use. Check out our list of top 10 Oakley polarized sunglasses!

Rimless Eyeglasses: Fashion Meets Minimalism

In the late 1880s rimless glasses were invented in an effort to make eyeglasses more inconspicuous. They weren’t meant to be a fashion statement at the time, but Theodore Roosevelt popularized the style (during his presidency, from 1901 – 1909.) Since then, rimless glasses have been the choice for politicians, scientists, professors, and anyone else looking for functional yet elegant eyewear. Some people think rimless frames make them appear more mature, trustworthy, and intelligent. Steve Jobs was another iconic figure who preferred a pair of round, rimless glasses. You can capture his look, if not his genius, with the Savile Row 18KT Diaflex Round eyeglasses.

Steve Jobs glasses

There are benefits to wearing rimless frames beyond their appearance. Rimless glasses are lighter than full rim frames, so therefore more comfortable. And since the rims aren’t obstructing your view, your peripheral vision becomes wider and clearer. Rimless frames suit all types of faces, and can pretty much be considered Unisex, flattering both men and women.

Recent years have seen new technologies evolve for mounting lenses to rimless frames. An important thing to consider when selecting rimless eyeglasses is the appropriate lens material, since it will have to withstand being drilled through. Choose a polycarbonate or a Hi-Index lens material; these are strong enough to work with rimless frames. Plastic lenses crack and break more easily, which is why they are not a good choice.

FramesDirect.com offer over 150 different styles of rimless glasses, from all the highest quality manufacturers, but here’s a countdown of  our top ten most popular pairs:

Rimless glasses never go out of fashion, because of their understated utility – and the fact they put the focus on the person and not the glasses.

#FDAnswers: I have a strong prescription. What lenses do I need?

Full disclosure, this post is personal. I have terrible vision. I started wearing glasses when I was about 8 years old. By the time I was 11, I was begging my Mom for contact lenses. This was in the 80’s when high school girls and secretaries in movies would take their glasses off and suddenly be transformed from invisible to gorgeous. Glasses were not pretty – that’s the message I received loud and clear. Thus began a lifelong struggle with glasses, I would only wear them at home, if at all, never in public, and half the time I fell asleep with my contact lenses on. Even as the decades passed and glasses became the fashion accessory du jour, I couldn’t enjoy them. Why? Because my vision is so bad my lenses looked like the proverbial coke bottles, and turned my eyes into blinking little beads.

So that brings us to today. My prescription is -8 in my right eye and -11 in my left. I can’t see ANYTHING without glasses or contacts, but I have found a way to wear my glasses without feeling completely self conscious – three words: High Index Lenses. If your prescription is crazy high like mine, you should get the thinnest possible lens, which is the High Index 1.74. Anything +/- 6 you definitively need them. Another trick I’ve learned is to ask for no edge polish. When your lenses are VERY thick, polished edges call even more attention to them.

Here’s one of our expert opticians, Amanda, talking about the benefits of High Index 1.74 lenses.

If your prescription is between +/- 2 and 6, you could get the High Index 1.67 lenses. The 1.74 are the thinnest, but they aren’t available with tinting or progressives, so you may need the 1.67 if you’re looking for those add-ons. The other varieties of lenses – plastic and polycarbonate – aren’t great if you have a prescription that’s +/- 3. High Index lenses are a bit more expensive but well worth avoiding the coke bottle look!

All our high index lenses come with scratch resistant and UV coatings for no additional cost. You can learn more about all the lens types we offer at FramesDirect.com here.

2016 Spring Pantone Colors (for eyewear)

Each season, the Pantone Color Institute provides a palette inspired by art, society, and nature to reflect the current moment in our global culture. This Spring’s palette is strong yet soothing, and features colors that are uplifting while remaining grounded. The result is a calm and tranquil set of shades, that will help keep you cool as the temperature rises.

If you feel like your look could use a refresh but want to go a little bolder than a classic black or tortoise, here are three shades from the Spring Pantone palette that work really well for eyewear. First, Iced Coffee is a versatile color that will warm your skin tone and add interest without taking away from your features. Fiesta, a fun red tone, is for the more adventurous. But red glasses have come a long way since Sally Jesse Raphael! And we think you can almost consider Snorkel Blue a neutral, just think of it as a navy with a little added pizzazz.

Lookin’ Like Paris Fashion Week

From Tuesday, March 1st to Wednesday, March 9th, the Ready to Wear, Fall/Winter 2016 runway shows took place in Paris. Fashion week feels like it has become fashion year (since fashion weeks are cropping up in every major city, not to mention there are Men’s and Couture showings as well.) It can be hard to know when to perk up and take in the trends, but it doesn’t get more real-deal than the epicenter of fashion, Paris.

Among the the prestigious designers sending their creations down the catwalk were some of our favorites from FramesDirect.com! Lanvin gave a sumptuous showing with formal, feminine silhouettes and and endless layers of ruffles and sequins (that somehow still managed to look subdued.) Get the look with these Mad Max-meets-Miami sunglasses from Lanvin.

At Miu Miu, Miuccia Prada had everything coming up denim. Somewhere between the 1990’s and Victorian times there’s a paradise where everyone is wearing tapestry maxi skirts – this show was that paradise. To channel the patchwork princess in you, try these futuristic-ly vintage (only in fashion, haha) shades from Miu Miu.
