Last Saturday was the first day of spring? Not for Texas, the weather was anything but spring-like. It dropped down to the low 30s in Austin, and Dallas got three inches of snow. This was also the last day of the South by Southwest festival in Austin. Maybe it was Mother Nature’s way of telling SXSW visitors that the show was over.

For those of you who may or may not know, Upgrade Your Face threw not one, but two showcases during SXSW. Lucky for us, both of the Upgrade Your Face events managed to dodge the nasty weather, and we left downtown just in time.

The first show was last Tuesday at Stompin’ Grounds on South Congress Ave. Initially I was a little concerned about this gig – it was pretty far from downtown by Austin standards and the music portion of SXSW didn’t start until the next day. I feared that the crowd might be a little thin. I was pleasantly surprised though, as The Jon English Band, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, Back Pocket Memory, and Justin Black & Big Heart managed to pack the quaint coffee shop to the gills.

Hats off to our own Clif Haley, who played guitar for the Jon English Band. They broke the ice and warmed up the crowd, and the rest of the bands followed suit. Many of those who attended the show were lucky enough to score some free shades handed out by employees Jackson and Charles.

Although we made some last minute changes, Friday’s show at Texas Rockfest was just as successful. TRF’s location, which was smack dab in the middle of downtown Austin during SXSW, managed to pull in thousands of fans of all types to check out bands like Atomic Outlaws, Danko Jones, and Warner Drive. Upgrade Your Face caught some live footage and interviews of the aforementioned, and we gave away a sweet pair of Electric Sunglasses at midnight. We were originally scheduled to have a booth out there on Saturday, but we switched to Friday at the last minute to avoid the winter weather. And the switch paid off, hundreds of fans were checking out UYF, and signing up to win the shades. Thanks to everyone that came out, check in a few weeks to see some of the vids we caught of the bands from both events.
